Next Generation Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS) for Agricultural Drought Monitoring

Over the past 40 years, drought has affected more people in world than any other natural hazard, affecting large segments of population and destroying resource base, livestock livelihoods. Recent projections show that events are expected to increase frequency intensity due climate change. According studies conducted by Food Agriculture Organization United Nations (FAO), 83% all damages losses caused globally between 2006 2016 have been absorbed agriculture, putting a part world’s at risk food insecurity. This study shows advantage scaling-up FAO’s agricultural monitoring early warning system (ASIS) building bridge with anticipatory action, financial mechanisms, social protection initiatives for preventing deterioration security strengthening resilience. The results methodology is based on supported digital innovation, machine learning, matured knowledge experiences accumulated over 10 years illustrated practical examples from different countries, ecological environments crops. A fused time series Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data Meteorological Operational satellite (METOP) National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was used produce consistent vegetation health index (VHI) 1 km spatial resolution 1984 present. VHI multiplied crop coefficient (kc) provide responsiveness anomaly occurs during sensitive phenological phases water stress such as flowering grain filling. weighted (wVHI) integrated start season (SOS) up end (EOS).
